Hail Mary

Traditional (Luke 1:28, 1:42; Church supplication) · c. 800

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee…

Read slowly

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

About this prayer

The Hail Mary joins the angel’s greeting and Elizabeth’s words to the Church’s request for Mary’s intercession. It is the Rosary’s characteristic prayer — ten times per decade while meditating on each mystery.

When to pray
Throughout the Rosary; three times at the opening for faith, hope, and charity; whenever you turn to Mary’s intercession.
After you read
On one Hail Mary, let the mystery you are contemplating shape the words — do not rush the repetition.
